Position Details: Tenure track faculty - Assistant Professor in Fashion Sustainability beginning with the Fall 2022 semester. Salary will be dependent upon qualifications and professional experience.



1. DEPARTMENT SUMMARY



Housed under the Family & Consumer Sciences Department (FACS), The Fashion Merchandising & Management (FASH) program prepares students for diverse careers in the global fashion industry, including design, manufacturing, sourcing, buying, distribution, retailing, marketing, advertisement, promotion and management. The program emphasizes the contemporary and historical ways of meeting the economic, physiological, aesthetic, psychological, cultural and social needs of consumers relative to fashion and textile products. The FASH program has two full time faculty and enrolls 100-120 undergraduate students, offering a B.S. degree in Fashion Merchandising & Management upon graduation. The FASH program is committed to a quality undergraduate program, innovative instructional technologies, collaborative projects with campus and a range of community partners. The FASH program has been diligently updating our curriculum and executing various changes to best respond to a rapidly changing global fashion industry as well as to support our local fashion businesses. We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to a bright future as we actively prepare our students to become global leaders in the fashion industry. We are looking for a new faculty who has expertise or clear focus on fashion sustainability to compliment the program's existing strengths and would like to join our exciting future growth journey.

2. POSITION DETAILS AND JOB DUTIES



· Teaching:

(1) Contribute to student success: The new faculty member will contribute to supporting student success by teaching critical undergraduate courses in fashion sustainability (environmental and social sustainability), fashion entrepreneurship (service learning course), internships, study tour/aboard as well as meeting new curricular needs. Details include:

o Employ innovative pedagogy and techniques to develop and lead sustainability courses on both environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

o Collaborate with industry professionals to develop and lead recurring/sustainable internship opportunities.

o Inspire and guide our students to successfully build innovative fashion businesses in our Sacramento area.

o Collaborate with the campus International Programs & Global Engagement Office to develop and lead recurring/sustainable study abroad opportunities.

o Stay current in new technologies and integrate related materials in program curriculum.



(2) Contribute to anti-racism work, inclusion, diversity, and equity: The new faculty member will come prepared to infuse inclusiveness and antiracism throughout the curriculum as well as lead efforts to advance our commitment to antiracism and building diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus and in the Sacramento region.

o Facilitate enriching opportunities for students to learn how to best serve diverse consumers through collaborations with community industry partners, and through internship, study abroad and service learning courses.



· Scholarly and Creative Activities: Engage in research/scholarly and creative activities. Examples include publishing articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and making conference presentations. Preferred research agenda includes i) community-based research with a purpose to specifically benefit the Sacramento fashion community, integrating social responsibility and environmental sustainability ii) scholarship on how the fashion industry and/or fashion education can support diffusing racism and promoting inclusiveness locally and globally.



· Service/Contributions to the Institution: Provide service to the department, college and university. Examples include providing student advising, being involved in recruitment of majors and serving on various levels of committees.



· Service/Contributions to the Community: Engage in service/contributions to the community. Examples include serving on a board of community organizations to strengthen our partnerships with local fashion/retail business and non-profit organizations.



3. QUALIFICATIONS



REQUIRED

· Education

Doctorate in Fashion, Apparel and Textiles or closely related field (e.g. Sustainability, Sustainable Business) required. Applicants in the final stages of their doctorate may be considered for appointment with the requirement that the degree be completed by August 2022.



· Special Knowledge and Abilities

o Demonstrated knowledge of fashion, apparel and textiles discipline, especially in fashion sustainability (environmental sustainability and social responsibility)

o Demonstrated ability to support student success by effectively teaching key undergraduate courses in fashion sustainability (environmental and social sustainability), fashion entrepreneurship (service learning course), internships, study tour/aboard.

o Ability to propose and teach new courses in area of expertise

o Ability to work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community

o Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

o Interest in and competency in using industry software

o Involvement in professional organizations such as ITAA, AMA, CSA and AAFCS.



· Experience

o Experience in teaching or research in fashion sustainability

o Experience in one or more of the following: community service learning, internship placements, inclusive curriculum development, networking with and across multiple industries



PREFERRED

o Ability to teach large classes

o Experience with teaching online classes

o Ability to develop undergraduate research projects/lead undergraduate teams

o Ability to advise students including work with student organizations

o Ability to teach a fashion design/illustration course if needed

o Experience or interest in curriculum design

o Potential or proven track-record as a researcher

o Professional experience in fashion business/industry

o Experience with internship placements

o Experience in building partnerships with local fashion/retail business

speak about the professional qualifications of the applicant and who have worked professionally with the candidate in recent years
