Title: Teaching Faculty in Sewn Construction and Fashion Design

Job Summary:

The Design Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a vibrant community that approaches design from a broad range of disciplinary and practice-based approaches, and supports a range of undergraduate (Textile and Fashion Design, Interior Architecture, third major underway) and graduate programs (MFA, PhD, and Masters of Design & Innovation). The Textile and Fashion Design Program, rooted in studio practice and cultural context, is currently undergoing a program revision to focus on producing graduates who are responsible, resourceful, and research-driven about the place of textiles and fashion in global societies, cultural, economies, and environments.

Within this context, this position is responsible for teaching foundational courses in the Textile and Fashion Design Program. The majority of this role is dedicated to teaching, including courses in sewn construction; patternmaking (ideally both paper patterns and digital); introductions to the design of apparel, accessories, and other sewn products; as well as contributing to training in career development, professional practice, and internship supervision.

Education:

Terminal degree (eg, MFA), or a degree at least one level above the level of instruction (MA/MS), or otherwise approved as qualified by the Dean.

Qualifications:

Required:
- Knowledge of creative and technical fashion design, including draping, pattern drafting, garment construction, and fitting, portfolio development
- Knowledge of presentation skills in the fashion industry, including fashion figure drawing and illustration
- Knowledge of appropriate equipment and technologies used for the production of garments, accessories, and other sewn products
- Knowledge of professional practice in fashion, including portfolio development
- Innovative teaching strategies for the topics above
- Strong written, oral, and online communication skills
- Knowledge of Adobe Suite applications

Preferred:
- Fashion industry or entrepreneurial experience
- Commitment to responsible production of textiles and fashion, e.g. striving for zero-waste ethos, circular economies, sustainability, etc.
- Knowledge of digital technologies for use in fashion design and construction, including CLO3D or equivalent
- Fashion industry skill sets such as trend forecasting and product development
- Familiarity with educational technology, including Canvas
