Adjunct Faculty, Fashion Design
Adjunct faculty in the School of Design's Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising will be responsible for teaching courses in fashion design. The responsibilities for this position will include some or all of the following: teaching, student advising, service, cooperative extension and administrative responsibilities. Responsibilities may include involvement in off-campus, evening or weekend duties, as well as student recruitment, retention, and placement efforts.
Department: School of Design: Fashion Design
Masters degree in Fashion Design plus at two years of experience in fashion design and product development or an equivalent combination of education and industry experience. Experience with generating tech packs, production pattern-making, fashion illustration, textile design, technical illustration, fit, and industrial production manufacturing methods essential. Teaching experience in fashion design preferred.
Industry knowledge of fashion, technical fashion design, product development, manual and digital Tech Pack development, production flat pattern-making, and sample construction.
Successful demonstrated working knowledge of creating pattern, draping, and garment construction. The ability to drive product development from initial design concept to a final technical package.
Documented higher-level technology skills related to technical fashion design. Adobe Creative Suite and Gerber technology preferred.
Working knowledge of active learning as a means to develop a students problem-solving and critical thinking skills specifically related to the fashion design discipline.
Ability to read, to listen, and to communicate information and ideas through spoken and written language.
Ability to use various means of communication (e.g. telephone, computer, other electronic devices) to work with students, peers, and outside contacts.
Keep current in the field of Fashion Design.
Demonstrated ability to teach and evaluate undergraduate students.
Familiarity with instructional techniques designed to reach students of varying preparation levels and abilities.
All courses require strong technology and organizational skills and experience working with Blackboard or a similar platform.
Ability to instruct students of varying preparation and abilities.
Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of students.
Commitment to excellence in teaching, service and technology application in the classroom. Ability to travel to field trip site locations regionally.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Position requires working with sewing equipment and irons. Position requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time and the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time.
Teaching responsibilities include preparing for and delivering classroom instruction; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing course materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; producing and evaluating; maintaining appropriate number of office hours, and participating in the programs exhibits, field trips, and the Annual Fashion Show.
Grading all assignments, written examinations and paper assignments; evaluating presentations; supervising independent study projects as described in the course syllabi.
Administrative responsibilities include writing syllabi, grading course work, and submitting final grades.
Assist with marketing the Fashion Design and Merchandising program to prospective students.
Student advising includes time spent meeting or online with students regarding academic, curricular and career matters.
Engaging in activities such as regular attendance at department meetings, faculty meeting, University meeting and professional development.
Engaging in professional peer review as an essential feature of effective teaching.
Preparing and distributing course syllabi according to university and departmental requirements.
Participating in the assessment activities of the Department, Division, and University as directed.
